Garstang & District Heritage Society Poppy Trail
You may have noticed a Poppy Plaque on the right hand side of the church when coming through the gate.
This was placed by Garstang & District Heritage Society to mark the end of WW1.They created a Poppy Trail around Garstang placing poppy plaques at war memorials, churches and other sites of significance. Each plaque has a unique QR code in the bottom corner, allowing them to be scanned by a Smartphone app which takes the user to the relevant information page on our website.
There are currently five Poppy Plaques placed in Garstang. They are located at :
1. The War Memorial, Croston Road.
2. Garstang United Reformed Church, Croston Road.
3. St. Thomas's Church, Church Street.
4. Side of the Singletons building, High Street.
5. Town Hall, Market Place.
In the graveyard there is one WW1 Commonwealth War grave that of Private Frederick Gardner.
Private Frederick Gardner, 29563, 2nd/6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, enlisted on 31st January 1917 at St. Helen's, and was posted to the 8th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. On 14th July 1917 he was transferred to the 2nd/6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Frederick served in France from 28th June 1917 until 22nd January 1919. Died 5th February 1920 from illness related to his war service.
